A great zen master once posed the question, if a tree fell in the forest and nobody was there to hear it, would it make a sound. Well, of course it would. One doesn't have to be a physicist to understand the result of sound waves moving on airwaves. And if you have vocal chords you can sing, because your vocal chords allow you to move sound waves across air waves. The voice, just like the guitar, or piano, is a musical instrument. If you've never considered your voice in this way before then you'll have the great adventure of getting familiar with it just like you would an instrument that is new to you, or one that you want to learn more about.
I've had both classical and pop vocal training. Learning the basics of classical technique is a great idea for anyone who wants to sing in any style of music. The first step is to be open to the idea of freeing your natural voice and developing a relationship with the voice that you have. Once you stop comparing yourself to Judy Garland or your favorite pop or opera star, I promise, you'll learn to love the voice you have and you'll love to sing even more than you do now.
